Golaghat District

Image
On August 14, 1987, it was given the status of a full-fledged district of Assam. Earlier it was a subdivision of Sivasagar district. The name of the district is derived from two Assamese words, "Gola" meaning shop and "Ghat" meaning boat stop. There is an interesting story associated with the name of the place Golaghat, which originated from the shops established by Marwari traders in the mid-20th century on the banks of the Dhansir river near the present Golaghat town.  City Skyline Golaghat On the other hand, some inscriptions on the rocks of Nagajari Khanikar village of Sarupathar, remains of fortifications, ancient structures, temples, tanks etc. are still evidence of the glorious history of the 9th century kingdom in the Doyang-Dhansiri valley. In the 16th century the valley of Doyang-Dhansiri was under the rule of the Ahoms. Before the reign of the Ahoms, this part was occupied by the Kacharis, who were generally known as the Herombials.
