Alipurduar district is the 20th district in the state of West Bengal, India. The district is headquartered in Alipurduar City. The district was established on 25 June 2014. The district was carved out of Jalpaiguri district and a new district was formed. The city of Alipurduar is also considered the gateway to the Bhutan and Northeastern states of India. Alipurduar is named after Colonel Hedayat Ali Khan, who played an important role during the Bhutan War. The district is famous for its dense forests, wildlife, tea gardens.



Area of Alipurduar district

It is spread over an area of ​​3136 square kilometers. Alipurduar district shares its borders with Jalpaiguri, Cooch Behar districts with Assam and Bhutan. The district is divided into six blocks i.e. Alipurduar-I, Alipurduar-II, Phalakata, Kumaragram, Kalachini, Madarihat-Birpara and 66 gram panchayats and nine census towns.

There are five Vidhan Sabha constituencies in the district, such as Kumaragram, Kalchini, Alipurduar, Falakata, Madarihat, all of them fall under Alipurduar Lok Sabha constituency.

The district has a population of about 15,01,983. The district has a sex ratio of 948 females for every 1000 males. Bengali is the first major language of the district.

Economy of Alipurduar district

The economy of the district is dependent on agriculture. Crops like tea, rice, jute, potato are cultivated in the district. The district has more than 65 tea gardens. Apart from agriculture, the people of the district earn their livelihood from sources of tourism, fishing, timber and sugarcane based industries.

The literacy rate of the district is 64.7%. Alipurduar High School, Alipurduar New Town Girls High School, Little Flowers English School, St. Joseph's High School, Jeetpur High School, Stepping Stone Model School, Kendriya Vidyalaya, Alipurduar College, Alidupar Mahila Maha Vidyalaya, Birpara College, Vivekananda College, Government Polytechnic College , Falakata Polytechnic, Alipurduar University etc. are the major educational institutes of the district.

Attractions of Alipurduar district

Due to its location in the foothills of the Himalayas, there are many tourist places here. Buxa Tiger Reserve, Jayanti Hills, Baksa Fort, Jaldapara National Park, Chilpata Forest, Jaigaon, Rajbhakta Museum, Santalbadi, Rovers Point, Rupang Valley, Chinhatti, Chaubatia etc. are the major attractions of the district.


How to reach Alipurduar

Alipurduva is well connected to the major cities of West Bengal by road. Taxis are easily available along with government and private buses in the district. Alipurduar district has two major railway stations, Alipurduar Junction and New Alipurduar which are quite well connected to other parts of the country through regular trains. 


The nearest airport in the Alipurduar district is at Bagdogra International Airport, Siliguri, which is about 190 km from here.
