Birbhum district is a district in the Indian state of West Bengal. It comes under Burdwan division. The district is headquartered in Siuri city. Rampurhat, Bolpur and Sainthia are other important cities in the district. The name Birbhum is made up of two words Bir and Bhoomi. Bir means 'brave' and bhum means land.
According to another theory, it means forest; Therefore, Birbhum means the land of forests. Birbhum is also known as the "land of red soil". Birbhum is noted for its topography and its cultural heritage which sets it apart from other districts of West Bengal.

It is spread over an area of 4,545 km2. The district consists of three subdivisions: Siuri Sadar, Bolpur and Rampurhat. Which is further divided into 19 development blocks, 6 municipalities and 167-gram panchayats. The district shares its borders with Birbhum, Bardhaman and Murshidabad districts as well as Jamtara, Dumka and Pakur districts of the state of Jharkhand.
