Thane district is a district in the Indian state of Maharashtra. It is under the Konkan division. The district is headquartered in Thane city. Thane is one of the industrially developed districts of the state of Maharashtra. 




In Thane district, the magnificent sea coast, bustling Sahi life, colonial architecture and the history of India will all be seen together. You can enjoy the finest blend of sand, sun, lush green meadows and sea here.

Area of ​​Thane District

The district is spread over an area of ​​4,214 sq km. It shares its borders with the suburban districts of Nashik, Ahmednagar, Palghar, Arabian Sea, Raigad and Mumbai. The district is divided into accompanying tehsils. Thane, Kalyan, Murbad, Bhiwandi, Shahpur, Ulhasnagar and Ambarnath are tehsils of the district. 


Population of Thane District 

 According to the 2011 census, Thane district had a population of 8,070,032. The district has a sex ratio of 880 females for every 1000 males. Marathi is the first major language of the district.

Thane district has a total of 18 assembly constituencies, which are placed in 3 Lok Sabha constituencies. Bhiwandi is a Lok Sabha constituency in Kalyan and Thane districts.

Economy of Thane District 

The economy of the district is dependent on agriculture. Rice, Wari, Urad and Moong are the major crops of the district. If we talk about the industries here, then it is the third most developed industrial area in the state. 


The district has more than 1500 large and medium scale and more than 18,000 small scale industries. Industrial areas have been developed at Thane, Kalyan, Ulhasnagar, Ambernath, Bhiwandi, from where pharmaceutical, textile, plastics, rubber, steel, engineering, fertilizers, electronics, chemicals and iron, etc. are manufactured. 


Education in Thane District 

The literacy rate of the district is 80.67%. 


D.A.V. Public schools, Hiranandani Foundation School, Holy Cross Convent High School, Poddar International School, AP Shah Institute of Technology, Dr. VN Bedekar Institute of Management Studies, KC College of Engineering, Rajiv Gandhi Medical College, etc. are some of the best educational institutions in the district. 


Travel attraction in Thane District 

Thane is also known as the "City of Lakes". 


Talao Pali, Velvet Lake, Junkali Lake and Upvan Lake are the famous lakes here. Ghats etc. are some of the best attractions of the district. 


How to reach Thane 

Thane district is quite well connected to other major cities of the country by roadways and railways. MSRTC operates direct buses to various cities like Pune, Nashik, Shirdi, Solapur, Kolhapur, Satara, Karad, Nagpur, Hyderabad etc. 


Private buses operate to various cities like Mysuru, Bengaluru, Mangalore, Hubli. 


Thane and Kalyan railway stations are well connected to the major Saharas of the country like Surat, Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Jaipur, Udaipur, Goa, Ratnagiri etc. Mumbai Airport is the nearest airport in the district.
