Kangra District is one of the 12 districts in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. It is the most populous district of Himachal Pradesh. The headquarters of the district is located in Dharamshala city.  Kangra is also known for "Katoch", the world's oldest royal dynasty. 


It is also among the most visited districts of Himachal Pradesh because it has numerous tourist destinations which attract tourist all over the world.

The district is divided into 21 tehsils: - Palampur, Noorpur, Dharamshala, Dera Gopipur, Jawali, Kangra, Baijnath, Indora, Nagrota Bagwan, Shahpur, Fatehpur, Jaisinghpur, Jawalamukhi, Khundian, Jaswan, Rakkar, Baroh, Dhira, Thural, Harchakian and Multhan are the tehsils of the district.

It is spread over an area of ??5,739 km2. It shares its borders with Chamba, Lahaul Spiti, Hamirpur, Una, Mandi and Gurdaspur districts of Punjab.

According to the 2011 census, Kangra district had a population of 15,07,223. Kangra district has a sex ratio of 1013 females for every 1000 males and a literacy rate of 86%.

Makar Sankranti, Shivaratri, Navaratri, Dholru, Baisakhi, Hariyali, Sair, Kangri Dham, Diwali are celebrated with great pomp in the district.

How to reach Kangra district 

Kangra Airport is 10 km away from the city. It is 94 km from Pathankot by the Kangra Valley railway line. 


Kangra district is well connected by road with Himachal Pradesh and other cities of India. It is 450 km from Delhi and 220 km from Chandigarh.
