Ratnagiri District at a Glance

 


Ratnagiri is one of the famous districts of Konkan Division in Maharashtra. It is known as the land of Vardamuni and Parashurama. The district is also known for horticulture in Maharashtra, especially the mango and cashew nuts here are famous all over the world. The district is headquartered at Ratnagiri city. Ratnagiri is the birthplace of Lokmanya Tilak as well as the workplace of Veer Savarkar. Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar also hailed from this district.



Area of Ratnagiri District

The district is spread over an area of ??8208 sq km. It shares its borders with the districts of the Arabian Sea, Sindhudurg, Raigad, Satara, Sangli and Kolhapur. The district is divided into nine tehsils  i.e., Ratnagiri, Rajapur, Lanja, Sangameshwar, Chiplun, Guhagar, Khed, Dapoli and Mandangarh. The district consists of 844 Gram panchayats and 1543 villages.

The district comes under the Ratnagiri- Sindhudurg Lok Sabha constituency. The district consists of five seats in Maharashtra Legislative Assembly i.e. Rajapur, Ratnagiri, Guhagar, Chiplun and Dapoli.

Ratnagiri district had a population of 16,15,069 as per the 2011 census. Ratnagiri district has a sex ratio of 1123 females for every 1000 males. Marathi is the first major language of the district.

The economy of Ratnagiri District

The majority of its population is engaged in agricultural activities and there is very little industrialization in the district. Major crops are mango, coconut, jackfruit, betel nut, rice, ragi, etc.

Jaigarh Fort, Swayambhu Ganpati Temple, Jaigarh Lighthouse, Thibaw Point, Ratnadurg Fort, Ganpatipule Beach, Gateway of Ratnagiri, Tilak Ali Museum, Thiba Palace, Jai Vinayak Temple, Dhampur Lake, Poornagarh Fort is one of the best attractions of the district.

The nearest airport in the district is Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport in Mumbai. Ratnagiri railway station is the main railway station in the district which is quite well connected to major Sahars of the country. 



Ratnagiri is well connected by road with support such as Mumbai, Pune, Goa, and Kolhapur, MSRTC buses are easily available in the district.
