Satara district is a district in the state of Maharashtra in western India. The district headquarters are located in the city of Satara. It comes under the Pune division. It derives its name from the seven forts that surround the city of Satara. Satara is also known as the City of Soldiers.
SATARA was the capital of the Maratha Empire, spread over 14 square kilometers. This district has a rich heritage. The district has many great warriors, kings, saints and great personalities that immortalize its history.
Area of ??Satara District
The area of ??the district is spread over 10,480 sq km. It shares its borders with Pune, Raigad, Solapur, Sangli, Ratnagiri districts. The district is divided into four sub-divisions as Satara, Vai, Karad and Phaltan which are further divided into eleven tehsils and 1719 villages. Satara, Karad, Wai, Mahabaleshwar, Phaltan, Main, Khatav, Koregaon, Patan, Jaoli and Khandala are tehsils of the district.
The district has eight seats in the Legislative Assembly. Karad North, Karad South, Patan, Koregaon, Wai and Satara fall under Satara Lok Sabha Constituency and Phalton and Main Madha are part of Lok Sabha Constituency.
Population of Satara District
According to the 2011 census, Satara district had a population of 30,03,741. Satara district has a sex ratio of 988 females for every 1000 males. Marathi is the first major language of the district.
Economy of Satara District
It is an agricultural district. The economy here is dependent on agriculture and animal husbandry. Turmeric, ginger and sugarcane are cultivated in abundance in the district. Rice, wheat, sorghum and millet are also grown in the district. There is very little industry in the district.
The district has about 40 factories including sugar factories. Important industries in the district include MIDC, Maharashtra Scooter, Bharat Forge, Shirke Paper Mill, etc. Koyna and Krishna are the main rivers of the district.

The literacy rate of the district is 82.87%.
Sainik School, Mona School, Nirmala Convent, Podar International School, Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Anant School, Chhatrapati Shivaji College, Gyanashree Institute of Engineering and Technology, Satara Polytechnic, Karmaveer Bahrao Patil College of Engineering etc. are some of the best educational institutes in the district.

The waterfalls here are very popular especially during monsoon, people from all over Maharashtra come to see the waterfalls here.
Ajinkyatara Fort, Sajjangarh Fort, Kas, Baramoti Vihir Step Well, Unghar Waterfall, Yavateshwar, Bamnoli, Dhom Dam, Tapola Lake, Pratapgarh, Panchgadi, Mahabaleshwar, Bambwali Flower Plato and Vajrai Waterfall are some of the best attractions of the district.

The nearest airport in the district is Lohgaon Airport in Pune which is located at a distance of 123 km from Satara and Chhatrapati Shivaji Airport of Mumbai is about 264 km from Satara.
Satara railway station is the major railway station in the district which is well connected to other cities of the country. Satara is well connected to major Sahars in Maharashtra via road.
Apart from MSRTC, private buses and taxis are easily available in the district.
