Wildlife Sanctuaries in Bihar

Valmiki National Park
Valmiki Nagar is located in the northernmost part of West Champaran district, about 100 km from Bettiah, near the border with Nepal. It is a small town with low population and is mostly within the forest area. A railway station in West Champaran district is located near the rail head of Narkatiaganj. The park is surrounded by the Royal Chitwan National Park of Nepal on the north and the Gandak River of the Himalayan Mountains on the western district. Here you can find tigers, sloth bears, wolves, deer, serows, cheetahs, pythons, peefols, chitals, sambar, nilgai, cheetahs, hyenas, Indian civets, wild cats, hog deer, wild dogs, monkeys, one-horned rhinoceros and Indian buffaloes sometimes move from Chitwan to Valmiki Nagar.

Bhimbandh Wildlife Sanctuary
Bhimbandh Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the southwest of Munger district. It is 56 Kms from Munger, 20 Kms from Jamui Railway Station and 200 Kms from Patna Airport. This forest is situated in the famous Kharagpur hill range, which is south of the Ganges river and is surrounded by densely populated non-forest areas all around. The vegetation of these forests is very dense, where Sal, Kend, and other trees are found. Tigers, leopards, sloth bears, nilgai, sambar, barking deer, monkeys, wild bears, four-horned antelope roam these forests in the sanctuary. There are many hot water springs in the valley and in the lower part of the mountain, which are known as Bhima Bandh, Sitakund and Rishi Kund. The temperature of all the hot springs remains the same throughout the year.

Rajgir Sanctuary
Rajgir Sanctuary is located at a distance of 2 km from Rajgir Railway Station and 105 km from Patna Airport. This sanctuary is spread over an area of 35.84 square kilometer. This sanctuary is full of small hills where the land is high and low. There are many hot water springs in this area. A considerable amount of sulfur is found in these hot springs. The wildlife present in this sanctuary is full of these animals like cheetah, hyena, barking deer and nilgai etc. Birds found here are Peafowl, Jungle Fowl, Parties, Black and Brown Quails, Horn Beal, Parrot, Dove, Myna etc. Wild bears can usually be seen in this area. Apart from this sanctuary there is a bamboo park (Venuvana). Originally this park was the garden of King Bimb Sar. The forest department has created this beautiful deer park with cheetahs, nilgai and sambhars. Adding to all the other beautiful places of historical importance here are the aerial ropeways that provide a way to the Buddhist Stupa on top of the mountain built by the Japanese.

Kaimur Sanctuary
Kaimur Wildlife Sanctuary is located in Kaimur district under DFO Shahabad Division. The area of this sanctuary is 1342 square kilometer which is mainly confined to hills and high lowlands. Black Buck, Nilgai, Chingara, Tiger, Leopard, Hyena, Wild Boar, Sloth Bear etc. are commonly found in these forests. This sanctuary is well connected by rail and road. The nearest railway stations are Sasaram, Dehri Onson and Bhabua. The tourist places around here are Sher Shah's museum, which is Sasaram Dhuakund (a natural spring), Karkat Gadh etc.
Gautam Buddha Sanctuary
This sanctuary is located at a distance of 20 km from Gaya and 60 km from Bodh Gaya. The area of this sanctuary is 259 square kilometer. The forest of this sanctuary is located in the lower part of the hill and the high and low paths are situated to the north of the hill Terai which is an extension of the Chota Nagpur plateau. The wild animals found here include tigers, leopards, hyenas, sloth bears, wild dogs, wild boars, sambar, spotted deer and nilgai etc.
Udaipur Sanctuary
Udaipur Wildlife Sanctuary is located in West Champaran district at a distance of about 15 km from Bettiah. It is spread over an area of about 8.87 square kilometer. Spotted deer, barking deer, wild boar, nilgai, wolves, wild cats etc. are found here.
Kabar Lake Bird Sanctuary
Kabar Jheel Bird Sanctuary is situated at a distance of 22 kms to the North West of Begusarai. The area of this sanctuary is 63.11 square kilometer. This lake is formed on the banks of the river Budhi Gandak which is also home to about 59 types of migratory birds and 31 species of fish along with 106 local species. This lake was given the status of bird sanctuary by the Bihar government in 1984.
Gogabil Bird Sanctuary
This sanctuary is located at a distance of 26 km from Katihar and it is spread over an area of about 217.99 square kilometer. Due to its global, national and regional importance, the state government has declared the Gogabil Bird Sanctuary as a limited area. This wetland is rich in variety of aquatic fauna and flora and it serves as winter habitat for migratory birds. As soon as the winter season comes, birds like Red Head Green, Portchai Spotbill, Tilkoot, Bahumani Goose, Lalsar, Schwanjan, Chaha, Crane, Ivis, Duck, Andhiga etc. come here, which stay for three to four months.
