Fatehabad City

Fatehabad district is one of the twenty-two districts of Haryana state of India. Fatehabad district was created as a new district on 15 July 1997 by separating it from Hisar district. Fatehabad was founded by Firoz Shah Tughlaq. It comes under Hisar division. Fatehabad is named after Fateh Khan, son of Firoz Shah Tughlaq.

The name 'Fatehabad' is a combination of two words: 'Fateh' and 'Baad' where 'Fateh' is the name of the eldest son of Firoz Shah Tughlaq and 'Baad' translates to 'prosperous'. The headquarters of the district is located in Fatehabad city. At different times the district was ruled by different dynasties - Ashoka dynasty, Maurya dynasty, Shunga dynasty, Prithvi Raj, Mughal dynasty etc. Initially, the Aryans started settling on the banks of river Saraswati but with the passage of time their colony spread to the present areas of Hisar and Fatehabad.

Area

The district is spread over an area of 2,538 km2. It shares its borders with Mansa and Sangrur districts of Punjab state in the north, Sirsa district in the west, Jind district, Hisar district in the east and Hanumangarh district of Rajasthan state in the south. The district is divided into 3 tehsils namely Fatehabad, Ratia and Tohana, which is further divided into 7 blocks namely Fatehabad, Ratia, Tohana, Bhuna, Bhattu Kalan, Jakhal and Nagpur. The district is situated at an average altitude of 208 metres.


Constituency

Fatehabad district is part of the Sirsa Lok Sabha constituency and the district has three Haryana Assembly seats: Fatehabad, Tohana and Ratia.


 Population

According to 2011 census, population of Fatehabad district is 9,42,011. The sex ratio in the district is 902 females per 1000 males. The major languages of the district are Hindi and Punjabi.

 

Economy

Agriculture is the backbone of the economy of the district. The main crops of the district are cotton, wheat, gram, sugarcane and paddy. There are very few large scale industries in the district. Some of the major industries in the district include cotton textiles, agricultural equipment, light machinery, electrical goods, pottery and food processing.


Education

The literacy rate of the district is 69.1%. Some of the reputed educational institutions of the district include Pioneer Convent School, Crescent Public School, Daffodils Public School, Apex College of Education, Shaheed Udham Singh School of Nursing, Surya College of Education, Tirupati College of Education, etc.


 

Center of Attraction

The attractions of the district attract many travelers from different parts of the world. In which Humayun Mosque of Fatehabad city is one of these, which was built by Mughal Emperor Humayun in Persian style architecture. Firoz Shah Tughlaq's Mound, Banavali Tila, Kunal Tila, Ashoka Pillar are other centers of attraction in the district.


 

Transportation

Fatehabad is situated on NH-9 which serves the major road transport in the district. The Grand Trunk Road also passes through the district. Transport facilities are available through state bus transport. The new bus stand is located at Sector 5, Hisar Road. Auto-rickshaws are easily available in urban areas. 

 


Major railway stations include Bhattu and Tohana which serve the Northern Railway zone of India. The nearest airport is Indira Gandhi International Airport which is located at a distance of 222 kilometers from here.
