Sonipat

Sonipat district is one of the 22 districts of Haryana state in northern India. The administrative headquarters of the district is located at Sonipat city which is located at a distance of 214 kilometers from the state capital Chandigarh. It is part of the National Capital Region. Historically, Sonipat was once known as Sonaprastha. Later it was called Swarnprastha. The word Swarnaprastha is made up of two words, Swarna means gold and Prastha means place. After this the name of the district became Swarnpat and is now known as Sonipat. According to ancient history, this place has been described in the great epic Mahabharata. In the year 1973, Sonipat emerged as a separate district on the map of Haryana state.


Area

The total area of the district is spread over 2,122 square km. It shares its borders with Panipat, Jind, Rohtak, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi, State. The district is divided into 4 sub-districts namely Ganaur, Sonipat, Kharkhoda and Gohana. Furthermore, the district consists of 8 towns and 332 villages.


Population

According to 2011 census, the total population of the district is 14,50,001. The sex ratio in the district is 856 females per 1000 males. Hindi is the main language of the district spoken by 98.10% of the people.


Economy

The district is mainly dependent on agriculture. Mainly rice, sugarcane, oilseeds and vegetables are cultivated in the district. Horticultural plants are also grown on a large scale.


Education

The literacy rate of the district is 79.12%. Now this district has become a major center of education. There are many excellent schools and colleges in the district. Indian Modern Senior Secondary School, Sunrise College of Pharmacy, Swarnprastha Public School, Delhi Public School, Rishikul Vidyapeeth School, Hindu College of Engineering, C.R.A. Jat College, SRM University, Deenbandhu Chhotu Ram University of Science and Technology, Bhagat Phool Singh Mahila University, OP Jindal Global University etc. are some of the best educational institutions in the district.

There are many famous historical and religious places to visit in the district. Such as ancient Pandav place, ancient temple of Guru Gorakhnath, Baba Dham, tomb of Khwaja Khizr, Tirath Satkumbha temple.


How to reach Sonipat

The nearest airport to the district is Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi, at a distance of 67 kilometers from here. Sonipat railway station is the main railway station of the district which is well connected to the rest of the country. Some important trains passing through Sonipat are Delhi-Chandigarh Shatabdi Express, Jhelum Express and Himalayan Queen etc. The bus terminal is located along State Highway No. 20, before Mama Bhanja Chowk. Regular bus services are available to neighboring cities and towns.
