Dhubri District

Dhubri district is a district in the state of Assam. The headquarters of the district is located at Dhubri town. The district is named after its headquarters town Dhubri. There are many interesting stories associated with the name of this place. 

Dhubri Gurdwara

According to one story, Netai Dhubuni used to wash her clothes on the surface of a big stone on the banks of the Brahmaputra river. Therefore, earlier this place was called “Netai Dhubunir Ghat” but with the passage of time the name of this place was changed to Dhubri. On the other hand, according to the Bodo-Kacharis, the origin of the word is derived from the Bodo word dubra which means a type of grass. Dhubri, is known as the gateway to Western Assam. Dhubri district came into existence on July 1, 1983.

Dhubri district is full of attractive natural beauty. Both the banks of the Brahmaputra River delight the eyes of the beholders with their lush green fields, blue hills and dunes. Gurudwara Teg Bahadur Shaibji, Rangamati Mosque, Mahamaya Dham, Chakrashila Wildlife Sanctuary, Matiyabagh Hawa Mahal, Ramraikuti Satra, Panch Peer Dargah and other royal palaces attract people for their unique structures, religious sanctity and mythological significance. The district has many centers of attraction which attract many travelers coming from different parts of the country and the world. Mahamaya Dham is located at Bogribari, about 35 km away. 

Ponchu Ghat

The far eastern part of the city of Dhubri is considered a holy place like Kamakhya in Guwahati and Madan-Mohan in Cooch Behar. Pilgrims from far and wide come to this place to pray. Rangamati Mosque, built before the Mughal period, is located at a distance of 25 km. From Dhubri city. At that time the main objective behind the construction of this specific mosque was to provide a place of prayer to its soldiers. The Sikh Gurdwara, located in the center of Dhubri city, was established by the ninth Sikh Guru Tegh Bahadur. Ramarayakuti Satra, located on the border of India-Bangladesh and West Bengal at Satral in Dhubri district, is a sacred place established by Sri Sankardeva to propagate the Satriya culture in the region. Some other notable tourist places in the district are Panchpir Dargah, Chakrashila Wildlife Sanctuary, Florican Garden etc. The climate of the district remains pleasant almost throughout the year. The best time to visit the district is from October to December and from March to Eoril.

The geographical area of the district is 2,176 square km. It shares its borders with Kokrajhar, Bangladesh and Meghalaya, Goalpara, Bongaigaon, West Bengal and Bangladesh. Administratively, the district is divided into 3 sub-divisions namely Bilasipara, Dhubri (Sadar) and South Salmara-Hatsingimari. Furthermore, it consists of 9 sub-districts, 9 towns and 1,091 villages.

According to 2011 census, the population of the district is 19,49,258. The sex ratio in the district is 953 females per 1000 males. The major languages of the district are Assamese and Bengali.


Economy of Dhubri District

The economy of the district is mainly based on agriculture and forestry. Most of the people of the district are engaged in agriculture to earn their livelihood. The main agricultural products in the district are jute, mustard seeds, wheat, maize, pulses, sugarcane, tea etc. Adoption of new agricultural technologies among the farmers of the district helps in increasing the production of various agricultural commodities. Every year a large part of the revenue coming from agricultural products helps its economy to a great extent. Forestry products like wood and bamboo add additional income to its economy. The contribution of tea gardens to its economy is noteworthy.

How to Reach at Dhubri District 

Regular buses (both private and government) run from Guwahati to Dhubri. The distance is about 290 kilometers. And it takes 5.30 to 6.00 hours. Also one can reach Dhubri by road from Siliguri, Cooch Behar (West Bengal) as there is good population there. Buses are running regularly. The distance of Dhubri from Siliguri and Cooch Behar is 240 kilometers and 85 kilometers respectively. By Air: The nearest airport is Rupshi-Airport which is located about 15 km from the district headquarters. Flights available are from Guwahati and Kolkata, which fly thrice a week.
