Bajali District

Bajali district is a district in the Indian state of Assam, separated from Barpeta district. The Assam Cabinet, chaired by former Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, approved the proposal to make Bajali a full-fledged district on August 10, 2020. On January 12, 2021, Bajali was formally declared a district. On 31 December 2022, the district was re-merged into the existing Barpeta district. However, on August 25, 2023, the Assam Cabinet announced the restoration of Bajali district; on October 12, Bajali became a district again. The district headquarters is located in the Pathshala town.

The district covers an area of 418 km2 It is bounded by Baksa district on the north, Nalbari district on the east and Barpeta district on the west and south.

As per the 2011 census, the population of the former Bajali district is 2,53,8 The sex ratio in Bajli is 978 females per 1000 males. Assamese, Bengali, Boro are the languages spoken here.


Economy of Bajali District

Agriculture is the mainstay of the economy of the people of the district. About 70% of the population of the district depends on agriculture. The soil and climatic conditions of the district are quite good for agricultural activities. The major crops cultivated are rice, wheat, maize, jute, and potatoes.


Education in Bajali District

Bajali district has many famous educational institutions in North East India. Pathshala, the district headquarters, as its name suggests, is a major academic center in Assam. The district has a state university, Bhattadev University, which is located in Pathshala town. The district also has several degree colleges and junior colleges like North Kamrup College, Bijni Hastinapur Bhawanipur College, Nirmal Haloi College, Bhawanipur Zonal College, Anandoram Barua Degree College, Pathshala College. The major schools in the district include Bajli Higher Secondary School, Bhawanipur Higher Secondary School, Chaukhuti High School, Anandoram Barua Academy, Sriram Academy, Pathshala Public School and Christ Jyoti School.


Why to visit District Bajali?

There are many tourist attractions in Bajali district, the most prominent of which are Jalikhat, Parihareshwar Temple, Gopal Ata Than, Bamakhat Satra, Bhogeshwar Temple, Pahumara Chapori, Akaya Satra. There is a famous banyan tree, believed to be 208 years old, which is one of the oldest living banyan trees in India. The banyan tree on the banks of the Kaldia River in Jalikata is spread over four bighas of land and is considered to be the largest tree in the Asian subcontinent. The place has become an attraction for nature lovers, students and spiritual people who visit the area throughout the year. The best time to visit is October to January. During this time, the weather becomes pleasant and the atmosphere becomes foggy.


How to reach Bajali District 

Bajali district is well connected to the state headquarters as well as the rest of the country by both rail and road. Pathshala Railway Station is the main railway station of the district which is well-connected by Indian Railways to Kolkata, Guwahati, Barpeta Road, Bongaigaon and other places. National Highway 31 passes through Pathshala and is connected to all parts of Assam. 


National Highway 152 connects Bhutan with Assam, starting from Pathshala. There is a very good availability of buses from Guwahati, Nalbari, Dhubri, Bongaigaon etc. to Bajali. Taxis are also available for hire from all major landmarks to Bajali. The nearest airport is the popular Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport Guwahati which is located at a distance of about 96 km.
