Biswanath Chariali Assam
Biswanath district is a district of Assam state in India. It is one of the newly created districts as of the year 2015. The administrative headquarters is located at Biswanath Chariali. On 31 December 2022, the district got re-merged into the existing Sonitpur district ahead of the delimitation process by the ECI in the state. However, on August 25, 2023, the Assam cabinet announced the restoration of Biswanath's district status. The town is named after the ancient Biswanath temple. It is called Gupta Kashi as compared to Kashi of the golden reign of the Guptas.
Biswanath Chariali has immense importance as a pilgrimage since the days of the prehistoric era. Biswanath is a beautiful district with lots of natural scenery that allures every traveler, located towards the north-east of Assam. There are many important places to visit in the district like Biswanath Temple, also known as "Gupta Kashi", is situated at the confluence of the Brihadanga River with the Brahmaputra. There is a cluster of temples of various deities on the ghat. Maa Kalyani Temple, Nomara Picnic Spot, Biswanath Ghat, Nagasankar Temple, Green Ashiyana Island Resort, Monabari Tea Estate, Haleshwar Temple are some of the best attractions in the district. The best time to visit Biswanath is from the months of October to April.
Area
The district covers an area of 1,415 km2. The district is formed by merging most of the Gohpur and Biswanath subdivisions of the earlier Sonitpur district. The district is divided into 2 towns, 76 Gram Panchayat, 769 villages. The district is bounded by Arunachal Pradesh in the north, Golaghat, Brahmaputra River in the south, Lakhimpur district in the east and Sonitpur district in the west. Pub-Chaiduar, Chaiduar, Behali, Baghmora, Biswanath, Sakmotha, Soteya are the development blocks of the district.
Population
According to the 2011 census, Biswanath district has a population of 612,491. The sex ratio in Biswanath was 968 females per 1000 males. Assamese is the first major language of the district.
Economy
The main activity of the rural people in the district is agriculture. The major crops grown in the district are paddy, sugarcane, tea, jute, pulses and vegetables.

Biswanath Chariali, the headquarters of Biswanath district is very well connected by roads and rail and can be reached very easily. National Highways No. 15 and 37 pass through the district.
Regular bus services are available from Guwahati. Taxis are also available in Guwahati to bring you to Biswanath Chariali at an economical rate. Biswanath Chariali is connected by a broad gauge line to Rangapara Junction. The nearest airport is located at Tezpur under Sonitpur district. It is a civilian airport located at Salonibari, about 60 km from Biswanath town.
