Morigaon District
#Morigaon district is a district in the state of Assam with its headquarters located in Morigaon town. Morigaon emerged as a separate district on the map of #Assam on 29 September 1989. Morigaon district was a major and important part of Nagaon district until September 1989. The history of Morigaon is linked to the history of Nagaon.
The geographical area of the district is 1,551 sq km. and it is bounded by the Brahmaputra River, Karbi Anglong, Nagaon and Kamrup districts. From the administrative point of view, the district is divided into 5 sub-districts, 6 towns and 632 villages. There are 3 Assam Legislative Assembly constituencies in this district namely Jagiroad, Morigaon and Lahrighat.
Population
The population of the district is 9,57,423 as per the 2011 census. The sex ratio in the district is 967 females per 1000 males. The major languages in the district are Assamese and Bengali as per the 2011 census.
Economy
Agriculture is the backbone of the district's economy. More than half of its population is engaged in agriculture to earn their livelihood. The main agricultural products in the district are potato, sugarcane, mustard, vegetables, jute etc.
Education
The district has a literacy rate of 69.3%. The district is famous as the abode of many prestigious educational institutions. It provides a platform for higher education. Some of its recognized educational institutions are Muhila Home Model School, Shankar Dev Bidya Niketan, Azarbari M E School, Bhomora Guri High School, Kendriya Vidyalaya, Habi Baranga Bari Adarsh High School etc.
Attractions
The district has many centers of attraction that attract many travelers coming from different parts of the country and the world. The Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary, located in the floodplains of the Brahmaputra River in the district, covers an area of 38.81 sq km. The one-horned rhinoceros of this sanctuary is world famous. The district has a temple of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati on the Kachshila hill which was constructed in the 9th century. Many beautiful idols of Lord Ganesha are also present in the temple. Devotees from far and wide come to worship in this temple. The waterfall Shivkund located in the Amsoi hills of the district is a picturesque place that attracts many tourists every year. Some other notable places of interest in the district are Mayong, Deosal, Sitajakhla and many others.
How to reach Morigaon district?
Morigaon district is well connected by rail and road. National Highway No. 37 passes through the district touching the southern part of the district. Public and private buses run regularly from Marigaon town to other districts of Assam. The nearest airport to Morigaon is Tezpur Airport which is 66.4 km from here. Jagiroad Railway Station is the main railway station of the district.
