Malda district is a district in the state of West Bengal, India. It is located at a distance of 347 km from Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal. Malda is also known as the gateway of North Bengal. It was once the capital of Gour-Banga. The headquarters of Malda district is at English Bazar, also known as Malda. Malda Town Malda, the district headquarters that gives its name to the district, developed during its early days on the banks of the river Mahananda, and is now known as Phulbari. Some old houses can still be seen here. The city began to develop from 1925 to 1930. Now about 5 lakh people live in this city, and it is one of the largest cities in West Bengal.
