Malda district is a district in the state of West Bengal, India. It is located at a distance of 347 km from Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal. Malda is also known as the gateway of North Bengal. It was once the capital of Gour-Banga. The headquarters of Malda district is at English Bazar, also known as Malda.

Malda, the district headquarters that gives its name to the district, developed during its early days on the banks of the river Mahananda, and is now known as Phulbari. Some old houses can still be seen here. The city began to develop from 1925 to 1930. Now about 5 lakh people live in this city, and it is one of the largest cities in West Bengal. The district maintains the traditions of the past in culture and education.

The area of the district is spread over 3,733.66 square kilometers. It shares its borders with Murshidabad, Uttar Dinajpur, Dakshin Dinajpur district, Santhal Parganas of Jharkhand and Purnia districts of Bihar as well as Bangladesh. The district is divided into two subdivisions, 15 development blocks, 2 municipalities, 146-gram panchayats and 3,701 villages.

Chanchal subdivision comprises six community development blocks: Chanchal-I, Chanchal-II, Ratua-I, Ratua-II, Harishchandrapur-I and Harishchandrapur-II. Malda Sadar subdivision consists of Old Malda Municipality, English Bazar Municipality and nine Community Development Blocks: English Bazar, Gazol, Habibpur, Kaliachak-I, Kaliachak-II, Kaliachak-III, Manikchak, Old Malda and Bamangola.

Economy of Malda District
The economy of the district
is based on agriculture. Large-scale industries are rarely established in the
district. Mango, jute and silk are the most notable products of this district.
Fazli, a special variety of mango produced in this region, is exported all over
the world. Rice, jute, legumes and oilseeds are the major crops in the
surrounding area. Malda is the largest producer of excellent quality jute in
India. Mulberry orchards and mango orchards are also spread over large areas;
Mango trading and sericulture are the main economic activities.

Transportation in Malda District
NH 12 passes through the city. Gour Kanya Bus Terminus serves as a bus depot for both private buses and government bus services operated by the North Bengal State Transport Corporation.
There are four railway stations that serve the metropolitan city.
Malda Town railway station serves the English Bazar area; Old Malda Junction
railway station serves the Old Malda area; Malda Court railway station serves
Mangalbari and Naldubi area, and Gaur Malda railway station serves Mahadipur
Gaur area. The nearest airport is in Kolkata.
