Gurgaon is now known as Gurugram meaning " Guru's Village " as it is presented as the village of Guru Dronacharya. Later its name became Gurgaon. It is also believed that the village of Dronacharya, the guru of Kauravas and Pandavas, came under the area occupied by this present district. Gurgaon emerged as a separate district in the Haryana state map on August 15, 1979. The administrative headquarters of the district is located at Gurugram city which is located at a distance of 295 kilometers from the state capital Chandigarh . Area   The total area of the district is spread over 1,258 square km. Based on this size it is ranked 19th in the state and 585th in India. District Gurugram shares its borders with Jhajjar, Faridabad, Palwal, Mewat, Rewari and the Union Territory of Delhi. The district is divided into 5 sub-districts, 9 towns and 242 villages.
