Hojai district is a district of Assam, India. Hojai district is one of the 5 districts of Assam which was declared on 15 August 2016 by the Chief Minister of Assam. The district headquarters is located at Sankardev Nagar, which is about 8 km from Hojai town. Hojai district was formed from three tehsils of Nagaon district, Hojai, Doboka and Lanka. Hojai was part of the undivided Nagaon district of the then Assam province. On 31 December 2022, the district was temporarily merged with Nagaon district. Then on August 25, 2023, the Assam Cabinet announced to restore district status to Hojai. The word Hojai means priest in Dimasa language. Hojai was a part of the Dimasa Kachari kingdom in medieval times. "Hojai" is one of the clans Sengfong of the Dimasa tribe, the city "Hojai" got its name from this clan.
