Hojai

Hojai district is a district of Assam, India. Hojai district is one of the 5 districts of Assam which was declared on 15 August 2016 by the Chief Minister of Assam. The district headquarters is located at Sankardev Nagar, which is about 8 km from Hojai town. Hojai district was formed from three tehsils of Nagaon district, Hojai, Doboka and Lanka. Hojai was part of the undivided Nagaon district of the then Assam province. On 31 December 2022, the district was temporarily merged with Nagaon district. Then on August 25, 2023, the Assam Cabinet announced to restore district status to Hojai. The word Hojai means priest in Dimasa language. Hojai was a part of the Dimasa Kachari kingdom in medieval times. "Hojai" is one of the clans Sengfong of the Dimasa tribe, the city "Hojai" got its name from this clan. Hojai is primarily an agricultural belt and is famous as the "rice bowl" of Assam and in recent times it has attracted attention from the outside world, especially the Gulf countries, due to its excellent agarwood processing and agar-product exports.

The district is spread over an area of ​​1685 sq. km. It shares its borders with Nagaon, Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao districts. The district is divided into 3 tehsils namely Hojai, Doboka and Lanka. Which are further divided into 5 development blocks and 372 villages.


Economy

Agriculture is the main source of livelihood of the majority of the population of Hojai. Forest-based small scale industries like agar wood distillation units, saw mills and bamboo and cane furniture manufacturing units are in abundance. The ethnic groups of the region depend on their traditional activities like weaving, animal husbandry etc.


Population

As per the 2011 Indian Census, the three tehsils of the newly formed Hojai district had a population of 9,31,218. The sex ratio in Hojai is 954 females per 1000 males. Bengali is the first major language of the district.

The literacy rate of the district is 78.93%. The district is known to be the abode of many prestigious educational institutions. It provides a platform for higher education. Some of the most recognised educational institutions in the district are: Don Bosco High School, Kendriya Vidyalaya, Arunoday Public School, Ajmal Group of Colleges, Rabindranath Tagore University are some of the best institutions in the district.
