Jind district is one of the 22nd and oldest districts of Haryana state. The name of the district is derived from its headquarters town, Jind, which is named after Jaintpuri. It is also said that this city was established during the time of Mahabharata. According to a legend, the Pandavas built a temple in honor of Goddess Jayanti, prayed for success and then began a war with the Kauravas.   Gradually, a town named Jaintapuri arose around the temple, which with the passage of time came to be known as Jind. According to the history of the district, it was established in 1776 by Raja Gajpat Singh. A fort was also built by him at this place in 1775. After India gained its independence, Jind became a part of Indian territory. In 1948 it became part of Sangrur district.
