Jind

Jind district is one of the 22nd and oldest districts of Haryana state. The name of the district is derived from its headquarters town, Jind, which is named after Jaintpuri. It is also said that this city was established during the time of Mahabharata. According to a legend, the Pandavas built a temple in honor of Goddess Jayanti, prayed for success and then began a war with the Kauravas.


 

Gradually, a town named Jaintapuri arose around the temple, which with the passage of time came to be known as Jind. According to the history of the district, it was established in 1776 by Raja Gajpat Singh. A fort was also built by him at this place in 1775. After India gained its independence, Jind became a part of Indian territory. In 1948 it became part of Sangrur district. On November 1, 1966, Jind emerged as a separate district in the Haryana district map. Jind is located at a distance of 182 kilometers from the state capital. Jind has many temples around the city, and has connections to the mythology of the Mahabharata, Vamana, Narada and Padma Puranas. Jind is also known as the sacred region of Kurukshetra.


District Jind is spread over an area of 2,702 square km. The district is divided into 4 sub-districts, 6 towns and 306 villages. The district consists of three sub-divisions namely: Jind, Narwana and Safidon. Jind, Julana, Aleva, Narwana, Uchana, Safidon and Pillu-Kheda are tehsils of the district. According to 2011 census, the population of Jind district is 13,34,152. The sex ratio in the district is 870 females per 1000 males. Hindi is the official language of the district.


 

Agriculture is the main source of income of the district. The first modern public dairy plant has been established in the district. The district also has many small scale industries manufacturing bicycles, paper boards, sugar, mine sarees, leather goods and woolen blankets.

 There are many famous historical and religious tourist places in the district. These places are the ancient fort in Safidon, Bodh Stupa, Dhamtan Sahib, Jind Fort, Hansdehar, Narwana, Pindara, Fort Jafargarh, Ram Rai. There are many places in the district which are mentioned in Mahabharata, Vamana, Narada and Padma Purana. Rani Talab is the main destination for tourists, while Pandu Pindara and Ramrai are the main religious places, attracting devotees for holy bath on Amavasya.
The nearest airport to Jind is Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport which is at a distance of 113 km from here.

Jind is well connected to other major cities of the country through regular trains. Rohtak is a big railway station near Jind which is situated at a distance of 54 km from here. Jind is well connected by road to Haryana and other major cities of the country.
