On August 14, 1987, it was given the status of a full-fledged district of Assam. Earlier it was a subdivision of Sivasagar district. The name of the district is derived from two Assamese words, "Gola" meaning shop and "Ghat" meaning boat stop. Jorhat is a district in the Indian state of Assam located in the central part of the Brahmaputra Valley. The district headquarters are located in Jorhat city. Jorhat was earlier a subdivision of the undivided Sibsagar district. In 1983, Jorhat was separated from Sibsagar district to form a new district. Jorhat is known as the cultural capital of Assam.
