Jorhat

Jorhat is a district in the Indian state of Assam located in the central part of the Brahmaputra Valley. The district headquarters are located in Jorhat city. Jorhat was earlier a subdivision of the undivided Sibsagar district. In 1983, Jorhat was separated from Sibsagar district to form a new district. Jorhat is known as the cultural capital of Assam. The name Jorhat is derived from two Assamese words - one is "Jor" which means to join and the other is "Haat" which means market.



Attractions

Jorhat as a base location provides access to many interesting places of international importance like Majuli, Kaziranga National Park, Shiv Sagar, Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary, the famous Molai forest, Dhekiakhuwa Bornamghar, etc. Majuli is a place of pilgrimage for Vaishnavites since the era of the Ahom kingdoms. Majuli has 26 Satras of which Kamalabari, Auniati and Garmur are the most prominent. 



Thousands of travellers from different parts of the world visit here every year. Dhekiakhuwa of the district is about 461 years old and this Namghar is playing an important role in the practice of Vaishnavism. Maidam of Lachit Borphukan is also a centre of attraction for tourists. Mau Chapori Picnic Spot, Burhi Gosani Devalaya, Borbheti Than, Garkhia Dol, Moinaporia Namghar, Buddha Vihar etc. are some of the other best attractions of the district. Tea Festival and Majuli Festival are celebrated with great pomp every year in the district. The weather of the district remains pleasant throughout the year but the time from October to March is considered to be the best time to visit here.



How to reach Jorhat

Jorhat Airport, commonly known as Rowriah Airport, is located within the city and this makes it even easier to travel to this place by air. Jorhat is well connected by air, with daily flights from Guwahati and Kolkata and four flights a week from New Delhi. Jorhat has its own railway station named Jorhat Railway Station which is connected to major cities of Assam. It is well connected to other major cities of Assam as well as the rest of India. Jorhat city is about 308 km from Guwahati, the distance is covered in about 6 hours by regular buses connecting both the cities. State as well as private buses are also easily available.



Area

Jorhat district has an area of ​​2,851 square kilometers. The district is bordered by Majuli, Sivasagar, Golaghat districts and the state of Nagaland to the south. The district is divided into 6 tehsils, namely Jorhat East, Jorhat West, Titabor, Teok, Mariani and Majuli. Apart from this, it consists of 6 sub-districts, 11 towns and 848 villages.



Population

According to the 2011 census, the population of Jorhat district is 10,92,256. The sex ratio in Jorhat is 956 females per 1000 males. Assamese is the first major language of the district.

Economy

The economy of Jorhat is mainly based on agriculture. The main crop of the district is rice. Several small and cottage industries of cane and bamboo work, silver jewellery, furniture, brass smithy, umbrella making, soap manufacturing, etc. are established in the district.



Education

The literacy rate of the district is 83.42%. Jorhat is considered one of the best places for modern education in the state. The city of Jorhat has one of the highest number of educational institutions in the region. Crescent Academy, Carmel Convent School, Delhi Public School, Kendriya Vidyalaya, Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, The Jagannath Barua College, Assam Agricultural University, Kaziranga University, Jorhat Medical College and Hospital, Jorhat College etc. are some of the best educational institutions in the district.
