Kurukshetra district is one of the 22 districts of Haryana . It is part of Ambala division. Kurukshetra is called Dharmakshetra or holy place. The word 'Kurukshetra' means the land of Kauravas. According to the Puranas, Kurukshetra is named after King Kuru who was the ancestor of the Kauravas and Pandavas. The war of Mahabharata was fought on this land. During this war, Lord Krishna preached the Bhagavad Gita here.    Sheikh Chilli Maqbara In the year 1973, the place of Kurukshetra emerged as a separate district in the map of Haryana. This district was separated from the then Karnal district, later parts of this district were transferred to Kaithal and Yamunanagar districts at that time. The administrative headquarters of the district is located at Kurukshetra town, located at a distance of 93 kilometers from the state capital. Kurukshetra is also the land of Srimad Bhagavad Gita. Jyotisar is the place in Kurukshetra where Krishna is believed to have preached the Gita to Arju
