Kurukshetra
Kurukshetra district is one of the 22 districts of Haryana. It is part of Ambala division. Kurukshetra is called Dharmakshetra or holy place. The word 'Kurukshetra' means the land of Kauravas. According to the Puranas, Kurukshetra is named after King Kuru who was the ancestor of the Kauravas and Pandavas. The war of Mahabharata was fought on this land. During this war, Lord Krishna preached the Bhagavad Gita here.

In the year 1973, the place of Kurukshetra emerged as a separate district in the map of Haryana. This district was separated from the then Karnal district, later parts of this district were transferred to Kaithal and Yamunanagar districts at that time. The administrative headquarters of the district is located at Kurukshetra town, located at a distance of 93 kilometers from the state capital. Kurukshetra is also the land of Srimad Bhagavad Gita. Jyotisar is the place in Kurukshetra where Krishna is believed to have preached the Gita to Arjuna in the Mahabharata.

Kurukshetra district is spread over an area of 1,530 square km. Kurukshetra district is divided into 3 sub-districts, 5 towns and 415 villages. Thanesar, Pehowa, Shahabad and Ladwa are tehsils of the district.

Population
Demographically, as of 2011 census, the district has a population of 9,64,655. The sex ratio is 888 females per 1000 males, while the child ratio is 818 females per 1000 males. Hindi is the first major language of the district.

Economy
The economy of the district is predominantly agricultural, with an overwhelming workforce employed as cultivators and agricultural labourers. The district enjoys an ideal location being situated close to NH 1. It is emerging as an industrial belt and has started throbbing with a wide spectrum of developmental activities and immense potential of industrial opportunities has emerged. Farming is the main occupation of a large percentage of people i.e. more than 90% of the people are engaged in various agricultural activities. Wheat and rice are the main crops of the district. Among the commercial crops, sugarcane is an important crop of this district.

The literacy rate of the district is 76.31%. There are many educational institutions in the district which include schools and colleges like Geeta Niketan School, DPS, The Millennium School, Greenfield Public School, Wisdom World School, Kurukshetra University, National Institute of Design, National Institute of Technology, Sri Krishna Ayush University.

Kurukshetra is an important Hindu pilgrimage site and there are many pilgrimage sites around the city. There are many famous historical and religious places to visit in the district. These places are Ancient Tila Amin, Bhadrakali Temple, Bhishma Kund, Bhor Saidan-Crocodile Farm, Bodh Stupa, Brahma Sarovar, Heritage Museum, Gurudwara Mastgarh, Jyotisar, Kalpana Chawla Memorial Planetarium, Kurukshetra Panorama and Science Centre, Raja Karna Fort, Sheikh Chehali Tomb, Shri Krishna Museum, Mini Zoo.

How to reach
Haryana Roadways buses and other neighboring state corporation buses connect Kurukshetra to other cities like Delhi, Chandigarh and other important places. Local bus, auto, taxi facilities are available to travel in and around Kurukshetra city. Kurukshetra railway station, also known as Kurukshetra Junction, is located on the main Delhi–Ambala railway line. Kurukshetra is well connected to all the important towns and cities of the country.
