Majuli district is located on Majuli, the world's largest river island, situated on the Brahmaputra River in the state of Assam. Majuli is a famous island on the Brahmaputra River flowing in the state of Assam. It is also the largest district island in the country and is very close to the city of Jorhat. It was formed due to the change of course of the Brahmaputra River and its tributaries, mainly Lohit.  Majuli is the abode of Assamese neo-Vaishnavite culture. Jorhat is a district in the Indian state of Assam located in the central part of the Brahmaputra Valley. The district headquarters are located in Jorhat city. Jorhat was earlier a subdivision of the undivided Sibsagar district. In 1983, Jorhat was separated from Sibsagar district to form a new district. Jorhat is known as the cultural capital of Assam. The name Jorhat is derived from two Assamese words - one is "Jor" which means to join and the other is "Haat" which means market.
