Paschim Medinipur district is a district in the state of West Bengal, India. It was formed on 1 January 2002 after the bifurcation of Midnapore into Paschim Medinipur and Purba Medinipur . The district headquarters is located in Midnapore city . The district is named after a local goddess "Medinimata". Kharagpur city is the largest city in the district.
