Purba Medinipur District

Purba Medinipur district is a district in the Indian state of West Bengal. It is the southernmost district of Medinipur division. The district headquarters is located in Tamluk city. The Sanskrit word Tamluk is derived from Tamra Lipta which means "full of copper". According to local folk, the name Tamralipta comes from King Tamradhwaj. The district was formed on 1 January 2002 after the bifurcation of Medinipur into Purba Medinipur and Paschim Medinipur, located on its northern and western borders. TAMLUK B.D.O.
