Purba Medinipur District



Purba Medinipur district is a district in the Indian state of West Bengal. It is the southernmost district of Medinipur division. The district headquarters is located in Tamluk city. The Sanskrit word Tamluk is derived from Tamra Lipta which means "full of copper". According to local folk, the name Tamralipta comes from King Tamradhwaj. The district was formed on 1 January 2002 after the bifurcation of Medinipur into Purba Medinipur and Paschim Medinipur, located on its northern and western borders.

Area

The district is spread over an area of 4,736 km2. Odisha state is on the south-west border; The Bay of Bengal lies to the south; the Hooghly River and South 24 Parganas districts in the east; Howrah district in the north-east; Paschim Medinipur district is in the west. Purba Medinipur is composed of the sub-divisions of Tamluk, Contai and Haldia in the district. During the division of Medinipur, another sub-division, Egra, has been created from the erstwhile Contai sub-division. In 2011, the state government proposed to rename the district as Tamralipta district. There are 21 police stations, 25 development blocks, 5 municipalities and 223 gram panchayats, 3500 villages in this district.

It is an agricultural district. Agriculture is the main source of livelihood in the district. The main crops grown in this district are paddy, pulses, oilseeds, potatoes, vegetables, betel nuts, flowers etc. Marketing mainly depends on the local market and nearby Kolkata market.

The nearest airport to the district is Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport, which is at a distance of about 137 K.M. The distance between Kolkata to Purba Medinipur is approximately 92 K.M. Is. Express/local train can be availed from Howrah station to reach East Medinipur. It takes 1 hour 50 minutes to reach Purba Medinipur.


The distance between Kolkata to Purba Medinipur via road is approximately 85.7 K.M. It is about 3 3-hour journey from Kolkata via NH-6 by bus or car.
