Goalpara district
Goalpara district is a district in the state of Assam with its headquarters located in Goalpara town . The district derives its name from its headquarters town, Goalpara. It is believed that the word Goalpara is originally derived from the word "Gwaltippika" which means the village of milkmen. In the local language "Para" means village. Earlier this place was under the rule of Rajbongshi kings. In 1765, the British came to this place and started ruling over it. Thereafter, the Goalpara region was merged into Assam in 1874 with Dhubri as the district headquarters in 1826. Presently the former Goalpara district is divided into four different districts namely Kokrajhar, Bongaigaon, Dhubri and Goalpara. Goalpara as a separate district came into existence in the year 1983.
