Goalpara district

Goalpara district is a district in the state of Assam with its headquarters located in Goalpara town. The district derives its name from its headquarters town, Goalpara. It is believed that the word Goalpara is originally derived from the word "Gwaltippika" which means the village of milkmen. In the local language "Para" means village. Earlier this place was under the rule of Rajbongshi kings. In 1765, the British came to this place and started ruling over it. Thereafter, the Goalpara region was merged into Assam in 1874 with Dhubri as the district headquarters in 1826. Presently the former Goalpara district is divided into four different districts namely Kokrajhar, Bongaigaon, Dhubri and Goalpara. Goalpara as a separate district came into existence in the year 1983.



Attractions

The district has many centers of attraction which attract many travelers coming from different parts of the country and the world. There is a temple of Lord Shiva on the peak of Dadan Hill located in the district. The temple was built by Dadan, one of the generals of King Bana of Sonitpur. Many mythological stories are associated with Dadan Hill. Hulukunda Hill, a very beautiful hill located in Goalpara town, is an ideal place for nature lovers as from this place one can easily enjoy the mesmerizing views of the Brahmaputra River and Naranarayan Setu. Kumri Beel, located at a distance of 11 km. The north-western part of Goalpara town is one of the most attractive and convenient places to develop gardens, boating and bird sanctuaries. Dekhdhova is located at a distance of 4 km from Sri Sri Surjya Hill. It is also known as Pahad Singh. The Brahmaputra River also flows near it. After seeing the Brahmaputra, tourists can easily reach many beautiful tourist places from here. Sri Surjya Hill Sri Sri Surjya Hill is located at a distance of 16 km from Goalpara. Mornoi and Sainik School also come on the way to this hill from Goalpara. Tourists can see extremely beautiful statues of many gods and goddesses on this hill. Some other notable sightseeing places in the district are Peer Mazhar, Arjhara Chibinang, Sitalapati Shilpa and many more. The climate of the district is neither too hot in summers nor too cold in winters. The best time to visit Goalpara is October to December and February to April.


How to Reach

Goalpara is well connected by air, railways and road. You can reach Goalpara by flying to Guwahati from the popular Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, which is about 97 km from Goalpara. Goalpara Town is the main railway station of the district and is well connected to the main cities of Assam. There are many taxis and private cars available for hire from the railway station that take tourists to their desired destination. Buses to all major cities of Assam are easily available from Goalpara ASTC Station and Ambari Bus Terminal.



Area

The geographical area of ​​the district is 1,824 sq. km. and is bounded by the Brahmaputra River, Kamrup and Dhubri districts and East Garo Hills district of Meghalaya. In terms of administration, the district comprises 5 sub-districts, 11 towns and 829 villages. Lakhipur, Balijana, Matia, Dudhnoi and Rangjuli are the tehsils of the district.


Population

The population of the district is 10,08,183 as per the 2011 census. The sex ratio in the district is 964 females per 1000 males. The major languages ​​of the district are Assamese and Bengali.



Economy

Agriculture is the backbone of the economy of the district. Most of the people in the district are engaged in agriculture work to earn their livelihood. The main agricultural products in the district are paddy, wheat, maize, black gram, green gram, lentil, sesame, jute, peas, etc. A major portion of the revenue every year comes from agricultural products which helps its economy to a great extent. .


Education

The district is famous as the abode of many prestigious educational institutions. The literacy rate in the district is 67.37%. It provides a platform for higher education. Some of its recognized educational institutions are Guernment B.T. College, Asian Mission Institute, Adarsh ​​Vidyalaya, Dudhnoi College, Goalpara Jatiya Vidyalaya, Goalpara Law College, Goalpara Science Academy, Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Kendriya Vidyalaya, etc.
