Azamgarh is a city in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. This article will give a clear overview of what makes Azamgarh remarkable. The city of Azamgarh is situated on the banks of the Tamsa, a tributary of the Ghaghra. This city is part of Purvanchal region of eastern Uttar Pradesh. One of the easternmost districts of Uttar Pradesh, Azamgarh was once part of the ancient Kosala kingdom. Azamgarh is also known as the land of Rishi Durvasa, whose ashram was located in Phulpur tehsil, near the confluence of Tamsa and Mazhui rivers, 6 km north of Phulpur. Azamgarh was founded in 1665 by Vikramajit's son Azam. Vikramajit was a descendant of the Gautam Rajputs of Mehnagar in Nizamabad Pargana who, like some of his predecessors, converted to Islam. He had two sons, Azam and Azmat. Azam gave his name to the city and fort of Azamgarh, while Azmat built the fort and settled the market of Azmatgarh Pargana Sagri.
