Azamgarh

The city of Azamgarh is situated on the banks of the Tamsa, a tributary of the Ghaghra. This city is part of Purvanchal region of eastern Uttar Pradesh. One of the easternmost districts of Uttar Pradesh, Azamgarh was once part of the ancient Kosala kingdom. Azamgarh is also known as the land of Rishi Durvasa, whose ashram was located in Phulpur tehsil, near the confluence of Tamsa and Mazhui rivers, 6 km north of Phulpur.
Azamgarh was founded in 1665 by Vikramajit's son Azam. Vikramajit was a descendant of the Gautam Rajputs of Mehnagar in Nizamabad Pargana who, like some of his predecessors, converted to Islam. He had two sons, Azam and Azmat. Azam gave his name to the city and fort of Azamgarh, while Azmat built the fort and settled the market of Azmatgarh Pargana Sagri.
Economy and Industry
The economy here is mainly based on agriculture, in which crops such as rice, wheat, sugarcane, maize, gram and mustard are grown. Mubarakpur near Azamgarh is famous for Banarasi sarees, and Nizamabad for black pottery. There are also small sugar mills and textile industries.
Tourism and religious places
Durvasa Rishi Ka Ashram near Phulpur and Dattatreya Rishi Ka Ashram near Nizamabad reflect the history of this place. Mubarakpur is famous for Banarasi sarees, Thakurji Temple and Masjid, Avantikapuri, Gobind Sahab, Devtari/Bhiron Baba Temple, and places like Mehnagar Fort and Pond, which are known for seasonal fairs and pilgrimages.
Azamgarh is 268 km from Lucknow and 761 km from Delhi by road. It has one of the largest bus depots in eastern Uttar Pradesh and is connected with regular bus services to almost all district headquarters of Uttar Pradesh and Delhi. A new highway called 'Purvanchal Expressway' was built in 2021 to directly connect Azamgarh to Lucknow and other important cities.
How to reach Azamgarh
Azamgarh station is one of the most important stations in eastern Uttar Pradesh. Azamgarh is directly connected by Delhi to Kaifiyat Express, Mumbai to Mumbai LTT-Azamgarh Weekly Express, Godan Express, Ahmedabad, state capital Lucknow, Jaipur, Ajmer and Amritsar and KOAA AMH Express (13137) to Kolkata.
Azamgarh has a new airport, which is 9 km from the city center. It was inaugurated virtually by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 10 March 2024.
