Yavatmal, the name of the district is derived from Yeota, the word 'Mal' means 'hill' or palace. The pargana in Ain-i-Akbari is called Yotalhara, Lohara is a village three miles west of Yavatmal. It is believed that Yavatmal, along with the rest of the former Berar province, was part of the mythical kingdom of Vidarbha described in the Mahabharata.  Berar formed part of the kingdom of Ashoka Maurya which ruled from 272 to 231 BCE. Then the district came under the dynasty of Sunga.
