Yavatmal district is one of the most popular districts in the Indian state of Maharashtra. It was formerly known as Yeotmal. It comes under the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra. It is the third-largest district of Vidarbha after Nagpur and Amravati. District headquarters are located at Yavatmal city. 


The history of the district is very old. Yavatmal, the name of the district is derived from Yeota, the word 'Mal' means 'hill' or palace. The pargana in Ain-i-Akbari is called Yotalhara, Lohara is a village three miles west of Yavatmal. It is believed that Yavatmal, along with the rest of the former Berar province, was part of the mythical kingdom of Vidarbha described in the Mahabharata. 


Berar formed part of the kingdom of Ashoka Maurya which ruled from 272 to 231 BCE. Then the district came under the dynasty of Sunga. Seven members of the Vakataka family, who ruled a miniature inscription at Kava XVI in Ajanta, are named

 The area of ​​the district is spread over 13,582 km2. It shares its borders with the districts of Amravati, Wardha, Chandrapur, Nanded, Parbhani and Akola as well as Andhra Pradesh. The district consists of sixteen tehsils, Arni, Babhulgaon, Darwha, Digras, Ghatanji, Kalamb, Mahagaon, Maregaon, Ner, Pandharkavada, Pusad, Ralegaon, Umarkhed, Wani, Yavatmal and Zari Jamani are the tehsils of the district.

The district has seven Maharashtra assembly constituencies: Digras, Arni, Pusad, Ralegaon, Umarkhed, Wani and Yavatmal. Wani and Arni are part of the Chandrapur Lok Sabha constituency. Umarkhed is part of the Hingoli Lok Sabha constituency while Ralegaon, Digras, Yavatmal and Pusad fall under the Yavatmal-Washim Lok Sabha constituency.
