Bankura district is an administrative district in the Indian
state of West Bengal. It is a part of Medinipur division, which is one of the
five administrative divisions of West Bengal. The headquarters of the district
is located in the city of Bankura. The district is also described as a
"connecting link" between the plains of Bengal in the east and the
Chota Nagpur Plateau in the west. According to local tradition, the district is
named after Banku Rai who had founded Bankura city.

The area of the district is spread over an area of 6,882 square kilometers. The district shares its borders with the districts of Bankura, East Bardhaman, Paschim Bardhaman, Purulia, Jhargram, Pashim Medinipur and Hooghly.

The district is divided into three sub divisions i.e. Bankura Sadar, Khatra and Bishunpur which are further divided into 22 development blocks, 3 municipalities, 190 gram panchayats and 5187 villages. The Damodar river flows in the northern part of Bankura district and separates it from Bardhaman district.
