Washim district is a district in the state of Maharashtra, India. The district headquarters is located in Washim City. It comes under the western region of Vidarbha. Washim city is the largest city in the district. In 1905 during the British Raj, Vashim district was divided into two separate districts, namely Akola and Yavatmal district. 



Wasim was then a part of Akola district. In 1998, it again became a district. Washim district has a very rich history. Vatsagulam, today known as Washim, was once the capital of the Vakataka Empire. The name Vatsagulam is derived from the name of the sage Vatsa.

The area of ​​the district is spread over 5,150 km2. It shares its borders with the districts of Akola, Amravati, Hingoli, Buldhana and Yavatmal. The district is divided into three subdivisions and six tehsils. Malegaon, Mangrulpir, Karanja, Manora, Washim and Risode are tehsils of the district.

Population of Washim District

According to the 2011 census, the population of Washim district was 11,97,160. The district has a sex ratio of 926 females for every 1000 males. Marathi is the first major language of the district.

Currently, the district has three assembly constituencies. These are Karanja, Risode and Washim. Whereas, Risod is a part of Akola Lok Sabha constituency, Karanja and Washim fall under Yavatmal-Washim Lok Sabha constituency.

Most of the people of this district are engaged in agricultural activities. Crops like soyabean, cotton, tur dal, millet, gram and wheat are cultivated in the district. Washim district is rich in minor minerals like building stones and sand. Mining activity is also the main revenue source for the district. Pengangandi is the main river of the district. Kas, Arunavati, Katepurna are the other rivers of the district.

How to reach Washim District

Washim is well connected to all the important cities of Maharashtra by the State Highway. MSRTC and private buses are easily available in the district. Private taxis can also be used to travel in the district.

Washim railway station is the major railway station in the district. Which connects Washim to other major cities of the country by regular trains. To reach Washim, you can also use the Nanded Airport which is located at a distance of about 106 km from here.
