Paschim Bardhaman district is a district of West Bengal. It is mainly known for its mining industries. The district headquarters is located in the city of Asansol. Asansol is the second largest city of West Bengal after the state capital Kolkata.
The district was formed on 7th April 2017. At that time the erstwhile Bardhaman district was divided into two parts i.e. Purva Bardhaman and Paschim Bardhaman. With the division, the agricultural part of Bardhaman now comes under East Burdwan, while West Bardhaman is the industrial centre. According to some historians, the district has been named after the 24th and last Jain Tirthankara Mahavir Vardhaman. Alternatively, Bardhaman means a prosperous and growing region.

The area of the district is spread over 1,603.17 km2. The district comprises two subdivisions: Asansol Sadar and Durgapur. In Paschim Bardhaman District, There are 8 Blocks Under Two Subdivision. Salanpur, Barabani, Jamuaria and Raniganj blocks come under Asansol Sadar subdivision while Andal, Pandabeshwar, Faridpur and Kanksa blocks come under Durgapur subdivision. District West Bardhaman shares its borders with Birbhum, Murshidabad, East Bardhaman, Hooghly, Bankura and Purulia districts as well as Dhanbad and Dumka districts of Jharkhand.

Industries are the main source of livelihood in the district. Hundreds of large, medium and small industries established in Durgapur and Asansol have made their mark which includes units like ISSCO, Durgapur Steel Plant, Chittaranjan Locomotive Works, Alloy Steel Plant, Durgapur Thermal Power Station. Raniganj Coalfield is the birthplace of the Indian coal industry.
Apart from coal, important minerals found in the district are iron ore, calcium carbonate, silica bricks and molding sands, glass sands, building materials, manganese, bauxite and laterite.

The literacy rate of the district is 68.49. There are many educational institutes in the district providing education in engineering, management, medicines, law, science and other technical and general courses. There is only one university in the district named Kazi Nazrul University.

The district headquarter Asansol is well connected by road to West Bengal and all major cities of India. The South Bengal State Transport Corporation operates daily bus services to Kolkata and many other destinations.
Private buses, taxis and radio taxis are easily available here. Asansol Junction railway station is the main railway station of the city. Asansol has very good connectivity with cities like New Delhi Amritsar, Ludhiana, Allahabad, Lucknow, Dehradun, Jaipur, Kota, Bhopal, Patna, Ranchi and Dhanbad. The domestic airport that serves the city is Kazi Nazrul Islam Airport. It is at a distance of about 25 kms from Asansol City Bus Terminus.
