Howrah district is a district in the state of West Bengal. Howrah district is one of the highly urbanized areas of West Bengal. It is also the second smallest district after Kolkata. Paschim Bardhaman district is a district of West Bengal. It is mainly known for its mining industries. The district headquarters is located in the city of Asansol. Asansol is the second largest city of West Bengal after the state capital Kolkata.  The district was formed on 7th April 2017. At that time the erstwhile Bardhaman district was divided into two parts i.e. Purva Bardhaman and Paschim Bardhaman. With the division, the agricultural part of Bardhaman now comes under East Burdwan, while West Bardhaman is the industrial centre. According to some historians, the district has been named after the 24th and last Jain Tirthankara Mahavir Vardhaman. Alternatively, Bardhaman means a prosperous and growing region.
