Sindhudurg is a district in the state of Maharashtra in India. The headquarters of the district is located in Oros city. It was carved out of Ratnagiri district on 1 May 1981 to form a new district. It comes under the Konkan Division



The district derives its name from the famous sea fort at Sindhudurg. Which was built by Shivaji Maharaj near Malwa. The word Sindhudurg means 'Sea Fort'. Sindhudurg district is the southern part of the Konkan coast which is historically famous for its long coastline and safe harbor.

It is spread over an area of ??5,207 km2. The district shares its borders with Sindhudurg, Ratnagiri, Goa, Arabian Sea. 




The district is divided into 8 tehsils such as Sawantwadi, Kudal, Vengurla, Malvan, Deogarh, Kankavali, Vaibhavwadi and Dodamarg. There are a total of 433-gram panchayats and 743 villages in the district.

 According to the 2011 census Sindhudurg district had a population of 8,49,651. Sindhudurg district has a sex ratio of 1037 females for every 1000 males. People here speak Konkani and Marathi.

The district has 3 assembly constituencies. These are Kankavali, Sawantwadi and Kudal. All these are part of the Ratnagiri-Sindhudurg Lok Sabha constituency.

The economy of the district is mainly dependent on agriculture. Rice, coconut, kokum, mango, cashew are the major crops of the district. There are very few large-scale industries in the district.

The literacy rate in the district is 85.6%.
