Jalpaiguri district is a district in the state of West Bengal, India. Jalpaiguri district was established in 1869 during the British Raj. The district headquarter is located at Jalpaiguri town, which is also the divisional headquarters of North Bengal. Jalpaiguri district is known as one of the oldest famous districts of the Union of India.

The district is also known for its simplicity, natural beauty. The name Jalpaiguri comes from the word "Jalpai" which means "olive" which are found in the city and nearby areas. The word "Gudi" means "place".

The district is spread over an area of ​​3,386 km2. Jalpaiguri district previously had three subdivisions - Jalpaiguri Sadar subdivision, Mal subdivision and Alipurduar subdivision. Jalpaiguri district shares international borders with Bhutan and Bangladesh along with Darjeeling, Alipurduar and Cooch Behar districts.

Constituency

The district is divided into seven assembly constituencies namely Dhupguri, Maynaguri, Jalpaiguri, Rajganj, Dabgram-Phulbari, Mal, Nagarkata. Jalpaiguri (Lok Sabha constituency) forms the Dhupguri, Maynaguri, Malbazar, Dabgram-Fulbari, Jalpaiguri and Rajganj constituencies, which also includes one assembly constituency in Cooch Behar district.

As of 2011 India census, Jalpaiguri district had a population of 3,872,846. Jalpaiguri has a sex ratio of 954 females for every 1000 males. Bengali is the first major language of the district, spoken by about 65.57% of the population.

The economy of Jalpaiguri revolves around three teas named "Tea, Timber and Tourism". Jalpaiguri is the second largest tea-producing center in West Bengal. Jalpaiguri is primarily an agricultural district. Most of the industries in the district are agriculture-based.

Education

The literacy rate of the district is 79.79 percent. Jalpaiguri Zilla School, Jalpaiguri Higher Secondary School, Techno India Group Public School, Kendriya Vidyalaya Sevak Road, Army Public School, Himalayan International Residential School, Holy Child School, St. James School, Anand Chandra College, Maynaguri College, Jalpaiguri Polytechnic Institute, Surya Sen Mahavidyalaya, Jalpaiguri Government Engineering College etc. are some of the best educational institutes in the district.

Attraction

There is hardly any place like Jalpaiguri which is so rich in terms of tourism. But a large part of it still remains to be tapped. If a tourist is a nature lover or a fan of wildlife then there cannot be a better place for him. There are wild parts in various sanctuaries, national parks and tiger reserves that are on offer.

ISKCON Siliguri

National protected areas include Gorumara National Park and Chhapramari Wildlife Sanctuary. Salugara Math, ISKCON Siliguri, Teesta Udyan, Chuk Chhuki Watch Tower, Chalsa Hill, Lal Jhamela Basti, Malbazar Park are some of the other tourist places in the district.

Transportation

Trains can be availed from nearby major railway stations like New Jalpaiguri Railway Station / Jalpaiguri / Jalpaiguri Road / New Maynaguri Railway Station / New Mall Junction Railway Station. 


It is well connected to the rest of the country by road. Air travel is available up to Bagdogra Airport, and from there it is connected to the district border by a 20 km expressway.
