Purba Bardhaman District

East Bardhaman district is a district of West Bengal, India. The district headquarters is located in Bardhaman city. The district was formed on 7th April 2017. At that time the erstwhile Bardhaman district was divided into two parts i.e. Purva Bardhaman and Paschim Bardhaman.

With the division, the agricultural part of Bardhaman now comes under East Burdwan, while West Bardhaman is the industrial center.

The district shares its boundaries with the districts of East Bardhaman Birbhum, Murshidabad, Nadia, Hooghly, Bankura and West Bardhaman.

According to the 2011 Census of India, the total population of the district was 4,83,5,532 after the bifurcation of Bardhaman district in 2017 again. Bengali is the first major language of the district. Apart from this, Santali and Hindi languages are also spoken here.

The Lok Sabha seat of the district is known as Bardhaman Purba, under which there are seven assembly seats namely Raina, Jamalpur, Kalna, Memari, Purvasthali South, Purvasthali North and Katwa.

East Bardhaman district is an agriculturally prosperous district of West Bengal. Rice is the main crop of the district, besides pulses, mustard, sesame, jute, and potatoes are also grown here. There are few medium-scale industries in the East Bardhaman district.

There are many rice mills in the district. There is also an industrial estate in Sakshatgarh. There are many wood carving artisans in the rural areas who have preserved their traditional art.

The literacy rate of the district is 75.48%. Burdwan Town School, Burdwan Nagar High School, Burdwan C.M.S. Institute of Engineering and Technology, Burdwan Medical College etc. are some of the best educational institutes in the district.

The nearest airport to the district is Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata. Burdwan Junction railway station is the main railway station of the district.
