Uttar Dinajpur District

Uttar Dinajpur district is a district in the state of West Bengal, India. The district was formed on 1 April 1992 by bifurcation of the erstwhile West Dinajpur district. Raiganj city situated on the banks of Kulik River is the headquarters of the district. It comes under Malda division.

Area

The area of the district is spread over 3142 square km. It consists of two subdivisions: Raiganj and Islampur. Which is further divided into 4 municipalities, 9 blocks, 99 panchayats and 1577 villages. The district shares its borders with North Dinajpur, Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Malda, South Dinajpur along with Kishanganj and Purnia districts of Bangladesh, Bihar.

Constituency

The district is divided into 9 assembly constituencies namely Chopra, Islampur, Goalpokhar, Karandighi, Raiganj, Kaliaganj, Itahar, Chakulia and Hemtabad. Chopra and Islampur constituencies fall under the Darjeeling Lok Sabha constituency. Goalpokhar, Karandighi, Raiganj and Itahar constituencies are part of the Raiganj Lok Sabha constituency.



Population

According to 2011 census, the population of North Dinajpur district is 30,07,134. The sex ratio in Uttar Dinajpur is 936 females for every 1000 males. Bengali is the first major language of the district.

Economy

The district is basically agricultural, most of the people are directly or indirectly dependent on agriculture. The industry is gradually developing in the district. The soil of North Dinajpur is very fertile. The soil is very rich in nature due to alluvial deposition which helps in growing paddy, jute, mesta and sugarcane etc.

Education

The literacy rate of the district is 60.13%. Raiganj Mohanbati High School, Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya , ST.XAVIER'S School, Kaliyaganj Parbati Sundari High School, Raiganj Coronation High School, Kaliyaganj College, Dr. Meghnad Saha College, Raiganj Polytechnic, Raiganj University, Raiganj Surendranath Mahavidyalaya etc. are some of the best educational institutions in the district.

Attraction

Kulik Bird Sanctuary, Asia's largest bird sanctuary is a part of Raiganj Wildlife Sanctuary, apart from this, Swaminath Temple, Rajbari, Itahar Shiv Temple, Chandigram Danhasori Peethasthal, Shri Ma Bhabani Devi Sthan hold their special significance.

Transportation

North Dinajpur is well connected to the rest of the state through national highways, state highways and railways. NH-27 and NH-12 pass through the middle of the district. Major railway stations in the district are Raiganj, Radhikapur, Kaliaganj, Dalkolha and Aluabari Road Junction. Dalkolha is the most important stop of long-distance trains. The nearest international airport to the district is Bagdogra Airport, about a two-hour drive from North Dinajpur.
