Chitkul

Chitkul?

Chitkul is a small village which is located in Kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh. It is the last and highest village in the Baspa Valley which is located at an altitude of 3,450 meters above sea level. It is also the last village in the country on the Indo-Tibetan border. This village is very unique for tourists.

The beauty of this place attracts everyone. Surrounded by the Himalayan Mountains, this village has a colony of about  650 people who live in wooden houses. Here you will be surprised by the clear blue sky, clean air, the chirping of the birds, and the view of the sunset in the evening behind the snow-covered Himalayan Mountains.

Devi Mathi Temple

Situated on the right bank of the Baspa River, this village has three temples of the local goddess Mathi. The most prominent temple is in the middle of the village. The local people believe that Mathi, the goddess of the village, came here after taking a long journey from Vrindavan and then she decided to stay here. Mathi Devi Temple is amazing in terms of architecture. This temple situated in the middle of the village has fine etching on the wood and the roof is very attractive.

Chitkul Village

This village is unique in itself. It is best to walk on foot to see Chitkul village in the valley because the roads are crooked. The village is situated in different bunches of houses at the foot of the hill, where there are narrow and steep trails that connect every house. These routes are so narrow that only one person can walk on them at a time. The biggest feature of Chitkul village is the old wooden houses which are a splendid example of the indigenous architectural style.

Chitkul Fort

This fort is on the upper side of the village. Actually, it is a temple. The foundation of the building is made of local solid stone, while the remaining three floors are made of stones and wood. There is a small temple on the top floor.

Last Dhaba of India

On the board near the dhaba is written “Last dhaba of Hindustan”. This dhaba is situated on the banks of the Baspa River. Delicious local dishes are served here.

Best time to go

It is always cold due to its base at the height. The best time to visit the Chitkul Valley is during the summer months of March, April and May. Winters are extremely cold and the valley experiences heavy snowfall. It is closed for tourists during the winter season.
