Hisar
Hisar district is one of the 22 districts of Haryana state of India. The headquarters of the district is located in Hisar city. Hisar was founded by Firoz Shah Tughlaq. Then it was called Hisar-e-Firoza. The name of the place is believed to be derived from the Arabic word 'Hisar' meaning 'fort'. But as days passed, the word 'turquoise' was dropped from its original name.

Till 1966 it was the largest district of Haryana. It was divided twice. BSF battalion headquarters is also in the district. It also has the largest administrative and judiciary complex. The Indus Valley Civilization flourished here. It is also known as Steel City as it is home to the largest producer of steel named Jindal Stainless Steel Factories. It is situated at a distance of 251 mi from the state capital Chandigarh.

Geographically, the total area of the district is 3,983 km². On the basis of area, it ranks third in the state and 308th in India. Hisar district is divided into 4 sub-districts, 11 towns and 269 villages. Hindi is the official language here.
Population
According to the 2011 census, the population of the district was 17,43,931. Hisar district has a sex ratio of 871 females for every 1000 males. The population density of the district is 438 persons per square km.
Economy
Economically, agriculture is the major source of income for the people of the district. The district is famous for steel production.
Education
The literacy rate of the district is 73.2%. There are many universities such as Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University, Lala Lajpat Rai University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, and Guru Jambheshwar University of Science and Technology. A large number of students from all over the country come here for higher education. The district has many famous schools like Vidya Devi Jindal School, Siddharth International School, OP Jindal Modern School, Angel Public School, Indus Public School, Army Public School, Thakur Das Bhargava Senior Secondary Model School and Vidya Devi Jindal School.

Attraction
The district has various tourist destinations which are famous throughout the world. These places are the ancient dome, ancient mound, ancient site of Rakhigarhi, Barsi Gate, British Palace, Dargah Char Qutub, Firoz Shah's palace and basement, Gujri Mahal, Jahaz Kothi, Lat Ki Masjid, ruined fort. The site of Rakhigarh belongs to the Harappan civilization.

How to reach
Domestic and international flights are available from Indira Gandhi Airport, Delhi. Hisar is about 170 km from here. Buses to Hisar are available every 15 minutes from the Inter State Bus Terminus in New Delhi via Bahadurgarh-Rohtak.
Hisar is on the railway map with broad gauge lines from Delhi/New Delhi Railway Station via Rohtak-Bhiwani and to some cities of Punjab.
