Mahendragarh

Mahendragarh district is one of the 22 districts of Haryana state in northern India. The name of the district is derived from the town of Mahendragarh, which was earlier known as Kanaud. This previous name of the place was derived from the Kanodia group of Brahmins. In the year 1948, Mahendragarh emerged as a separate district by merging various areas of the erstwhile princely states such as Narnaul and Mahendragarh tehsils from Patiala State, Dadri from Jind State and a part of Bawal Nizamat from Nabha State.

Sometime later, with the merger of the Patiala and East Punjab State Union with Punjab on 1 November 1956, it automatically joined as a part of the Punjab state, while in 1966 when Haryana state was formed, it became its Became a part. Mahendragarh is one of the few districts in India where the name of the district and the name of its main town are different.

 

Population

 
According to 2011 census, the total population of the district is 9,22,088. The sex ratio is estimated at 895 females per 1000 males. Hindi is the official language of the district.


 

Economy

 
From economic point of view the district is basically dependent on agriculture. The major crops of Mahendragarh district are wheat, millet, gram, mustard and cotton.

 



Education

 
The literacy rate in the district is 77.72%. The district has many educational institutions including schools, colleges and polytechnics. Haryana Central University is also in the district.

Attraction

 
There are many famous historical and religious tourist places to visit in the district. Dhosi Hills is an important tourist destination of the district. This is a Vedic period place known as Chyavan Rishi Ashram. It was here that Chyawanprash was prepared for the first time. Jal Mahal, Chor Gumbad, Birbal's Chhatta, Shah Vilayat's Tomb, Ibrahim Khan's Tomb, Nasibpur, Shah Quli Khan's Tomb, Tripolia, Chamunda Devi Temple, Bagot, Bamanwas etc. are the important attractions of the district.

How to reach Mahendragarh

The nearest international airport to the district is Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi at a distance of 145 kilometers from Narnaul city. Narnaul railway station is well connected with railway network. The district headquarters Narnaul is well connected to other major cities of the state of Rajasthan, Punjab and Delhi through road.
