Sirsa
Sirsa is one of the 22 districts of the state of Haryana. It is one of the largest districts in the state of Haryana in terms of area. The district headquarters is located in the city of Sirsa, which is 246 km from the state capital Chandigarh. The history of Sirsa dates back to the Mahabharata period. It is believed that the name Sirsa is derived from Sairishka, its ancient Sanskrit name mentioned not only in the great epic Mahabharata but also in the Ashtadhyayika and Divyavadana. On September 1, 1975, the present Sirsa district was formed by merging Sirsa and Dabwali tehsils of the former Hisar district.

It ranks second in the state and 274th in India by area. The district is divided into 4 sub-districts namely Sirsa, Dabwali, Rania and Ailanabad. In addition, it includes 5 towns and 330 villages.
Population
As of 2011 census, the total population of the district is 12,95,1 The sex ratio is estimated at 897 females per 1000 males. The major languages of the district are Punjabi and Hindi.
Economy
Agriculture is the major source of income for the people of the district. The Ministry of Panchayati Raj included Sirsa as one of the most backward districts in 2006 and received the Backward Area Grant Fund Program from the Government of Haryana. Crops like paddy, cotton, millet, wheat, gram, barley and mustard are grown in the district.

Education
The literacy rate of the district is 68.82%. The district has many educational institutions including schools and colleges. The Sirsa School, G.D. Goenka Public School, D.S. A. V.S. Centenary Public School, Delhi Public School, Sutlej Public School, St. Joseph International School, Chaudhary Devi Lal University etc. are some of the best educational institutes in the district.

The nearest airport to the district is the Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi. Sirsa Railway Station is the major railway station in the district. It is connected to all major cities of the country. Sirsa is quite well connected to other major cities of the country by road.
