Kamrup Assam

Kamrup is a district in the Indian state of Assam. The present Kamrup district, headquartered at Amingaon, is an exemplary and model civic district. It came into existence on 31 March 2003 with great promise and a strong desire to move forward. Before the year 1980, the present-day Barpeta and Nalbari districts were included in the undivided Kamrup.


The area of ​​the district is spread over 3,105 km². It shares its boundaries with the state of Meghalaya as well as Udalguri, Baska, Darrang, Kamrup Metropolitan, Goalpara and Nalbari districts. The district is divided into 2 sub-divisions namely Guwahati and Rangia. Further, there are 8 revenue circles under Guwahati sub-division and 3 revenue circles under Rangia sub-division. The district is divided into 12 sub-districts, 16 towns and 1,068 villages. The population of the district is 15,17,542 as per the 2011 census. The district has a sex ratio of 949 females per 1000 males. The major languages ​​spoken in the district are Assamese and Bengali.


Attractions

The district has many centers of attraction that attract many travelers coming from different parts of the country and the world. Kamrup district is known for many historical places like Hajo, Sualkuchi, Chhaygaon, Chamaria, Rangia, Palashbari, Boko and North Guwahati. Hajo is known for many religious temples like Hayagriba Madhaba Temple, Poa-Makka, Kedar Temple, Kameshwar Temple, Ganesh Temple and Kamaleshwar Temple. Hajo is also known for Dhoparguri Satra, a great Vaishnav temple established by Madhabdev. 


Sualkuchi is known as the Manchester of Assam. Mahatma Gandhi praised the women of Sualkuchi as the ray of dreams. It is the center of Eri-Muga-Pat fabrics, which are in great demand all over the world. Chhaygaon is known for the legendary Beula-Lakhindar Temple, Chamaria is also one of the great centers of neo-Vaishnavism. The Madan Kamdev Temple depicts the glorious history of ancient Kamrup. The Saraighat War Memorial Park in the district depicts the memories associated with the Battle of Saraighat. The best time to visit the district is from November to February and March to April.


How to reach:

There is a very good availability of buses running from Guwahati, Rangiya, Mangaldoi and Barpeta Road. A lot of government and private buses travel between Guwahati and Barpeta Road in NH31 and Guwahati to Mangaldoi/Tezpur in NH15 via Amingaon, the district headquarters of Kamrup. Taxis are also available on hire from all major destinations to Kamrup. The major railway stations to reach Amingaon are Guwahati Railway Station and Rangiya Railway Station. Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport is the nearest airport to the district.
