Bongaigaon district

Bongaigaon district is a district in the state of Assam with its administrative headquarters located in Bongaigaon town. The name of the district is derived from the name of an old village called Bongaigaon. 


The most notable date in the history of Bongaigaon district is 29 September 1989 when Bongaigaon emerged as a separate district for the first time by incorporating some areas of Goalpara and Kokrajhar districts of Assam state. After some time in 1874 the British government created a new province named Assam Valley Province and then the Goalpara district area was taken back from Cooch Behar. They were also added to the Assam province which continues till date.


Attractions

Bongaigaon is rich in culture, spirituality and nature. It is a place of great religious significance and rich heritage. The district has many centers of attraction that attract many travelers from different parts of the country and the world. Koya Kujia Eco Park, a project initiated by the Assam Tourism Development Corporation, is located near Abhayapuri at a distance of 15 km from Bongaigaon. A large number of migratory birds visit here during the winter season. Sri Surya Pahar, an important but relatively unknown archaeological site is located in Assam district. The site is dotted with some hilly terrain where visitors can see many rock-cut Shivlingas, votive stupas and many deities of Hindu, Buddhist and Jain deities. 


Manas National Park, an important national park, UNESCO Natural World Heritage Site, a Project Tiger Reserve, an Elephant Reserve and a Biosphere Reserve is located in the town of Bongaigaon. Some other notable sightseeing places in the district are Lalmati-Durmari Ganesh Temple, Rock Cut Caves, Manas River Point, Bagheswari Temple, Bagheswari Hill, Kachugaon Game Reserve, Kakoijana Reserved Forest, Roumari Dam, Bongaigaon City Garden and many more. The climate of Bongaigaon remains mild and pleasant throughout the year. But the best time to visit Bongaigaon is November to February and March to April.

Transportation

The district is well connected by NH-31. There are mainly three bus stands here out of which two are public and others are government stations. There are many direct buses from Bongaigaon to Guwahati and Siliguri. A lot of buses run between Guwahati and Bongaigaon. Taxis are also available on hire from all major destinations to Barpeta. The nearest railway station from the district headquarters. Bongaigaon and New Bongaigaon. The district is connected to all parts of the country by train services. The nearest domestic and international airport is the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati.


Area

The geographical area of ​​the district is 1,093 sq km. It is surrounded by Barpeta, Brahmaputra River and Kokrajhar district. The district is divided into 4 sub-divisions namely Bongaigaon, Bijni, North Salmara and Manikpur. It is further divided into 5 revenue circles namely Bongaigaon, Boitamari, Bijni, Dangtol and Srijangram, 5 towns and 563 villages.



Population

The district has a population of 7,38,804 as per the 2011 census. The sex ratio in the district is 966 females per 1000 males. The major languages ​​of the district are Assamese, Bengali.


Economy

The economy of the district is mainly dependent on the agricultural sector. More than half of its population is engaged in agriculture to earn their livelihood. The main agricultural products in the district are paddy, rice and pulses. A major chunk of the revenue that comes from agricultural products in the district every year helps its economy to a great extent. The industrialization of the district is very low as it has only a few agro-based industries.



Education

The literacy rate of the district is 69.74%. The district is known for its many prestigious educational institutions. It provides a great platform for higher education.
