Gurdaspur
Gurdaspur is a district in the state of Punjab, with its administrative headquarters located in the city of Gurdaspur. The district derives its name from its headquarters city, Gurdaspur. In the early 17th century, this place—then known as Gurdaspur—was founded by Guria Ji; consequently, the city was named Gurdaspur in his honor. The district officially came into existence on May 1, 1852.
Gurdaspur district spans a geographical area of 3,551 square kilometers and is bordered by the districts of Pathankot, Hoshiarpur, Kapurthala, and Amritsar.
The primary language spoken in the district is Punjabi, though Hindi is also widely spoken. As a result, travelers face no difficulties in navigating or exploring the region. The district's economy is entirely agrarian; the majority of the land within the district is utilized for agricultural purposes. 'Takht-e-Akbari'—the site where the Mughal Emperor Akbar was coronated—is located right here in Gurdaspur. The Archaeological Survey of India has declared this site a protected monument due to its immense historical significance.
The district is also home to the Mahakaleshwar Temple, the only Shiva temple in India where the Shivling is enshrined in a horizontal position. Every year, on the auspicious occasion of Shivratri, a grand Shivratri fair is organized at the Mahakaleshwar Temple. Located 45 kilometers to the west of Gurdaspur district, 'Dera Baba Nanak' is a site dedicated to Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji. Dera Baba Nanak houses two of the region's most renowned Gurdwaras: Sri Darbar Sahib and Sri Chola Sahib. Some other notable places to visit in this district include: Mukteshwar Temple, Barth Sahib, Achaleshwar Temple, Sri Hargobindpur, Dhyanpur Tirth, and many more.
